How The Mighty Have Fallen: Sunderland Beats Manchester United

Going into this matchup, Sunderland was facing the possibility of relegation to championship football while Manchester United are trying to save a season and a spot in the Europa League. Sunderland had a won a match at Old Trafford since their win in 1968 and they weren't worried about the legend of Manchester United considering the team had a scored a victory of Chelsea a couple of weeks back. Ryan Giggs took over the fired David Moyes a week ago and came into this game with a victory in hand so you know he was trying to prove to the bosses that he deserves to get the title of manager in the future, but Sunderland had other plans. Manchester played most of the game without any real doggedness and any real form in the game as a lot of their play was sloppy. Juan Mata was a real non-factor in the game as he made lots of poor passes and decisions.

In the 30TH minute of the game, Sunderland had been gaining some momentum and it was their latest hero Connor Wickham was able to create some magic. He had the ball near the corner flag in what seemed to be a play that was going nowhere until he volleyed it into the box and it found the foot of Sebastian Larsson who one timed it past David de Gea for the first and only goal of the game. The rest of the game Manchester United could never muster a real threat against Sunderland as the defense which was led by former Man UTD legend John O'Shea made sure that Man UTD were ineffective in the offensive side of things. Manchester United were actually pretty lucky that things didn't get out of hand because the crossbar was the savior of that team otherwise it would have been 3 to 0 in favor of Sunderland. After the final whistle blew, you had to believe that some stock was bought in Sunderland boss Gus Moyet moving forward. Due to the win, Fulham and Cardiff City were automatically relegated to the second division.
