At this stage of the game, teams are starting to qualify for the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League Knockout Stage. Bayern Munich, the German superpower was one of those teams on the verge when they entered the Allianz Arena in Munich today as they took on AS Roma. AS Roma was looking to secure a win over a Bayern side that had defeated Roma 7 to 1 in their last meeting back in October. Bayern sat atop of their group with nine points while Roma was in second with four points. Pep Guardiola has his side ready as they entered the game in a mission to prove their detractors wrong who claimed that Guardiola's style of football didn't work. The team sure looked ready as they controlled most of the possession in the game not allowing Roma to have any real chances. Bayern was constantly in the Polish goalkeeper Łukasz Skorupski face which would prove deadly for the Italian side.
Bayern had tons of chances and some of the best chances of the game were provided by David Alaba whose free kicks and crosses were deadly. In the 38TH minute of the game, one of Alaba's crosses would find French international Franck Ribery who blasted it past the goalkeeper for his 99TH strike for Bayern Munich. Roma would then feel the pressure, but they just couldn't get anything going for the rest of the first half and most of the second half. To make matters worse for Roma, they would lose forward Alessandro Florenzi due to injury and they would continue to struggle even though English international and veteran Ashley Cole came on the pitch. In the 64TH minute, their worst nightmare would come true as Robert Lewandowski was able to find 2014 World Cup hero Mario Götze for the second goal of the game and essentially the final nail in the coffin. In the second half, Roma would trow in Gervinho, who definitely lifted the teams spirits as he tried his best to create chances, but it wasn't enough as they lost the game 2 to 0. After the game, Pep Guardiola had this to say about the game, "The 7-1 was more of a coincidence, something like this happens once in a lifetime. Roma didn't want to suffer again so they played defensively, with six defenders. Nevertheless we were dominant, especially in the second half." I am picking two guys as my man of the match because it's so hard to pick just one when Bayern Munich is playing. David Alaba and Robert Lewandowski are my men of the match because even though they didn't score, they were all over the place creating chances and they were constantly in the heat of battle. Bayern has qualified for the round of 16 while Roma is in a battle with CSKA Moscow as both are tied for second.
